Atomic Bomb Socratic Seminar

Today we conducted a Socratic Seminar.  If you missed class you need to do the following:
Write a 1 page response to the questions (listed below) that were handed out on Friday regarding the United State's decision to drop the Atomic Bomb on Japan during WWII.

Essential Questions:

·       Question 1: What were the possible alternatives to dropping of the bomb?  What were America’s motives in dropping the atomic bomb?  Were these motives justified? 

·       Question 2: Why did the United States drop the second bomb so soon after the first?  Was the use of the atomic bomb necessary to end the war?  Ultimately, did the decision to use the atomic bomb make the world safer or more dangerous?

We watched 10 min of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and discussed.
3. US Response Notes:
*Read and take Cornell Notes on the following sub sections of Chapter 18 Section 4
The Japanese Advance, 1941-1942 pp. 614-616
Allied Victories Turn The Tide p. 617
Struggle For The Islands p. 618
Iwo Jima and Okinawa p. 619
*Focus on Italicised words, names, dates, and places.  You don't need to write down every little detail, only the main points of emphasis.
