Today we answered two essay questions.  Write them in paragraph format.  No introduction or conclusion needed.

1. Explain why the Viet Cong were successful in their Guerilla fighting strategies.  What tactics were used against the American soldiers and why were they difficult to deal with? How were they  effective in the face of the far wealthier, technologically superior powers of France and the United States?

2. What was the American strategy in Vietnam? (Think about military advisors, various strategies for war used) Was it successful? Give detailed examples to explain your reasoning.  How did U.S. objectives differ from the objectives of Ho Chi Minh and the Vietnamese Communists during the war?

Chapter 24 Section 2 Questions:

1. What were battlefield conditions like for American soldiers?
2. How was the use of booby traps an effective strategy for the Viet Cong?
3. Why do you think the United States felt it be necessary to use Agent Orange on the jungles of South Vietnam?
4. Look at the tunnel system on page 800.  How did this work to such a great advantage for the VC. How did the tunnels allowed the VC to hold out against superior firepower.
5. How was Napalm so destructive?
6. What is saturation bombing?  What kind of bombs did we use and how did they work?
7. What impact do you think the war had on Vietnamese culture?  Explain.
8. List 3 important facts about the Tet Offensive.
9. Briefly describe what happened at My Lai and why it became so publicly known.
