Chapter 22 Section 1 New Frontier
-Take notes on your designated topic as you read with a partner (this should build on the notes from yesterday (Economy, Assisting the Poor, Space Program)
-Get together with your partner and make a campaign poster that promotes the New Frontier program.
-Come up with a slogan (example: Change, Justice, Prosperity etc)
-On the back of the poster, make an outline that includes:
·     What it was?
·     Who was involved?
·     What happened?
·     What was the outcome?

·     Why was it important?

1.   What was important about Jackie Robinson’s career in baseball?
2.   How did the migration of African-Americans impact society in the north?
3.   The case of Plessy v. Ferguson declared segregation constitutional according to the principle of “separate but equal.”  What is problematic in the Plessy decision?
4.   What did the case of Brown v. Board of Education do, and why was/is education so significant to civil rights?
5.   Alabama Governor George Wallace announced at his inauguration, “I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.”   What is the “tyranny” he is speaking of?

6.   The Montgomery bus boycott set the stage for future protests.  What did the civil rights movement learn in Montgomery?

Read each page from the Alabama Council Newsletter.  Each page has multiple subtitles which are underlined.  Some sections are bigger than others.  For each section read it, write the subtitle down and write one sentence in your own words that describes what that section talked about.

  1. What were the goals of the boycott?
  2. Why did some citizens choose to support the boycott, while others did not?
  3. How long were they willing to boycott?
  4. Did the citizens of Montgomery see the issue as simply seating arrangements on a bus or something larger?
  5. Why were citizens of Montgomery willing to walk for miles each day, risk their jobs and personal safety to support the boycott?
  6. Analysis Questions: Why is a boycott an effective strategy? What obstacles stood in their way? What are some of the strategies for transforming institutional racism?
